Getting started

What is Massi?

Massi is a private spending tracker for Android. You log purchases and income or scan a receipt, and Massi sorts the purchases into categories and shows where your money goes. Everything is stored only on your phone.

Is Massi free?

Yes.

Do I need an account or to sign in?

No. Massi has no account. You open the app and start using it.

Purchases and receipts

How do I add a purchase?

On Home tap − for an expense or + for income. Pick the category, then the product, and type the amount. The keypad calculates too, for example 12,50 + 3. You can change the day from the date ribbon or the calendar.

How do I scan a receipt?

Tap the camera button on Home and photograph the receipt. Massi reads it and lists the products. Check the rows and save. You can also share a picture or PDF to Massi from another app.

A receipt was read wrong. What do I do?

You can fix product names, prices and categories before saving; a row can also be removed by swiping it left. If the reader often gets the same receipt wrong, tell us from the Feedback tile so the reader can be improved.

Why did a product get the wrong category?

Massi guesses the category from the product's name. An unsure guess is not shown as certain: it has a question mark next to it. Fix the category once and Massi remembers it next time.

Does scanning work on receipts from other countries?

The receipt reader is made for Finnish receipts. Receipts from other countries may not be read correctly yet. You can add entries by hand anywhere.

Currency

How do I change the currency?

Settings › General › Currency. The currency can only be changed while nothing has been saved yet, because the books are kept in one currency. The choice takes effect when you press Accept: Massi then restarts.

How do I log a purchase in another currency?

Tap the currency sign next to the amount and choose a currency. Type the amount in the currency you paid in: Massi immediately shows the amount in your own currency and the rate, and saves both. You see the amount paid on the purchase line.

Where do the rates come from? Do old purchases change?

The rates are the European Central Bank's daily rates. Massi fetches them at most once a week when you open the app, or when you press Settings › General › Update rates. A saved purchase keeps its own rate: an update only affects purchases made after it. If the rates are a week old, Massi reminds you to update them.

Your data and privacy

Does my data go anywhere?

Not by default. Entries, receipts and settings are stored only on your phone. After your first scanned receipt Massi asks once whether it may send, weekly, what it read from your receipts (never your entries) so that the reader can be improved. You can say no, or change your mind at any time. Fetching exchange rates tells the service only the list of currencies. See the privacy policy.

How do I make a backup, and what if I change phone?

Settings › Backup saves everything as one file in a folder you choose. On the new phone you open the same file with Restore. You can also switch on the automatic backup so you never have to remember.

I uninstalled the app. Is my data safe?

No, unless you have a backup. The data is only on the phone and goes with the app.

How do I ask for sent data to be deleted?

If you allowed receipt data to be sent and want it deleted, write to the support address and quote your installation number (shown in Settings › General › Help improve Massi).

Using Massi

How do I make a repeating payment?

Add a purchase or income and open the extra info (the i button): choose a repeat, for example monthly. Repeating payments are also under Settings › Recurring. Massi asks before a payment is booked, or books it for you.

How do I edit categories?

Settings › Categories. There you can add, rename and move categories, subcategories and products.

How do I change the colour or the language?

Settings › General: the language (Suomi or English) and five colour choices. Changing the language restarts Massi.

How do I turn Massi's tips off?

Settings › General › Massi the assistant. Switch it off and Massi no longer peeks from the bottom of the page.

If something does not work

The app crashed or something behaves wrongly.

Update Massi from Google Play and open it again. If the problem stays, use Settings › Feedback: it opens a message with Massi's and Android's version already written in. Tell us what you did and what happened. You can also write straight to Massi.support@gmail.com.
